
Before he has a name, he has a need: warmth, food and the sound of Elara’s voice. His wings are awkward; his claws catch in the fabric of her dress.
He likes to sleep with something of hers beneath his head. As he grows, the little house must keep making room for him.
Elara names him Ember beside the hearth. The name belongs to the small, warm creature resting against her wrist — something she can keep alive if she is careful.
